Workshop on Considerations for Formulation Strategies
10 September 2019 in Malmo, Sweden
European Paediatric Formulation Initiative (EuPFI) Workshop on Considerations for Formulation Strategies
The EuPFI has organised a workshop as part of the preconference workshop on 10thSeptember 2019 in Malmo, Sweden premises on Considerations for Formulation Strategies.
This session is designed to help attendees who are not familiar with formulations for children to understand the considerations involved in designing and choosing appropriate dosage forms for this important demographic.
It will be suitable for attendees who have little or no appreciation of what is involved in pharmaceutical product formulation as a brief introduction will be given. However the main target audience for this session will be formulators who are new to paediatric product formulation and want to deepen their knowledge in this field of expertise
The session will consist of a mix of lectures and exercises to allow you to develop an understanding of the factors that need to be considered when formulating products for the range of paediatric patients from neonates through to teenagers.
Lecture content will cover formulation basics including the limitations imposed by the physicochemical aspects of the drug substance. You will then learn about the influences of paediatric specific requirements such as excipients safety, the effect of age dependant physiological development and PK differences, dosage form acceptability and usability aspects including the needs for medical devices for both children and their caregivers.
Although the main focus of the session will be on oral dosage forms, some brief consideration will be given to delivery via other administration routes and additional considerations for the delivery of poorly soluble drugs will be touched on.
The lecture content will be reinforced by some group exercises where delegates will consider the best formulation strategy/strategies to provide age appropriate dosage forms for some example drugs in particular age groups.
At the end of the workshop you will have gained or reinforced an understanding of the factors that need to be considered when designing formulations for children and will have drawn upon your formulation skills and/or past experiences to make informed decision on the age-appropriateness of dosage forms.
The presentations from workshop are available for invited participants/delegates only.
